A. Jay Cristol was a United States Bankruptcy Judge who served the Southern District of Florida from 1978 until his death in 2019. He was born on December 16, 1930, in New York City and served in the United States Navy during the Korean War. Cristol was a graduate of the University of Miami School of Law and practiced law for many years before being appointed to the bankruptcy court.
In addition to his judicial career, Cristol was also a prolific author, writing numerous books on bankruptcy law and his experiences in the Navy. He was a frequent lecturer and speaker on bankruptcy and financial issues and was highly respected in the legal community.
Cristol was also known for his philanthropic efforts, particularly in support of the arts and education in Miami. He was a co-founder of the Miami City Ballet and served on the Board of Trustees for the University of Miami.
Cristol passed away on January 11, 2019, at the age of 88. His legacy lives on through his contributions to the legal, cultural, and educational communities of South Florida.
